The Academy Awards is received or given in honor of an actor/ actress with an outstanding performance in a leading role while working within the film industry. The Award popularly known as The Oscar is presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in the US.

The Oscar was first presented in 1929 at a parade dinner in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in what later became known as the first Academy Award with its first radio broadcast in 1930 and was televised for the first time in 1953, now televised real-time worldwide.

The Academy uses a sealed envelope to reveal the names of winners in 24 categories for the Award of merit. The award is traditionally presented by the previous year’s best actress winner. However, during the 3rd ceremony held in 1930, only one of the films (an actor has featured in) was cited in each winner’s final award, even though each of the nominees had two films with their names on the ballots. The following year, the system changed and actors are nominated for a specific performance in a single film. In the year 1937; the year of the 9th ceremony, the nominations per year officially became five and that was the limit. Since its inception, 83 actors have been awarded the Oscar.

Daniel Day-Lewis has received the most awards with three Best Actor wins. Spencer Tracy and Laurence Olivier were nominated on nine occasions, more than any actor. Peter O. Toole is the most nominated actor in this category without a win. James Dean remains the only actor posthumously nominated in this category on one occasion. Aged 29, Adrien Brody became the youngest actor to win this award for The Pianist (2002), while Henry Fonda, at the age of 76, became the oldest winner for On Golden Pond (1981). As of the 92nd Academy Awards, Joaquin Phoenix is the recent winner in this category for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck/ Joker in Joker (2019). For the records, a total of 3,140 Oscar statuettes have been awarded since its inception in 1929.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Academy President, David Rubin and CEO David Hudson announced that for the 2021 Oscar ceremony, streaming movies not shown in theatres would be eligible though at some point the requirement that movies be shown in theatres would return.
